“Owyhee” is the old English phonetic spelling used before Hawaiian language was Romanized by missionaries. Variations were used by explorers, fur traders, whalers, and sailors. It also appeared in early maps, journals, and documents. The Owyhee River and Owyhee County in Idaho were named after three Hawaiian fur trappers who went missing there in the early 1800s.
